in helping the homeless in ther region

Thank you to all who came to greet us at the 29th Ridgely Lions Club Strawberry Festival. We made a great difference that day by providing the latest homeless statistics. Some were shocked to learn that our most affluent counties had an incredible increase in homelessness. Queen Anne’s and Talbot counties are doing a better job at recording and reporting their homeless population. Thank you, Senator Harris, for taking the time to talk to us and review our homeless data. Also, thank you everyone, young and old, who encouraged us to continue to fight to alleviate Homelessness.

Our Focus
Rebuilding Together fills a pressing need in our communities. The rising cost of living and falling social service budgets have left some of our most vulnerable neighbors without the most basic of necessities, a warm, safe, and dry home.

The nation is facing enormous problems, many of which have reached crisis levels. The low-income homeowners that Rebuilding Together serves are disproportionately affected by these issues. Homeownership is at an all time high, especially among low to mid-income Americans, but the costs of owning and maintaining a home are growing exponentially. Healthcare costs are skyrocketing, leaving low-income citizens with less and less disposable income for home repairs and modifications.

Rebuilding Together focuses on the issues of homeownership, the elderly, the disabled, families with children, healthcare, and the rising federal deficit. By identifying the challenges associated with these issues we are well placed to face a problem with full understanding and to create real, sustainable solutions for the low-income homeowners we serve.

The announcement of this years funding is out and there is a lot to do to prepare the application. We need to set our plans for the year in motion and review our progress on our goals. We need to form some committees to assist with parts of the application including rating and ranking submitted projects. We did well last year and I have some ideas on how to improve the areas that we didn’t have the best scoring on. We need to have a huge turnout at this meeting so make sure that if you know someone that should be involved and isn’t getting these notices that you inform them (maybe someone you met at a meeting or church or anywhere that listened to the homeless issues we face and wants to help make a difference.)

I also am looking to start pushing for an increase in our Fair Market Rent rates. In order to do this I need ammunition. If you have data at your office about what current rental rates (within the last 6 months) are in your area or any type of rental housing study information I need you to send it to me. It is ridiculous that a one bedroom apartment in Dorchester county will only get $453 to cover rent and utilities when we cannot even find a landlord that will rent a place for under $480 (after being begged by our program people to get the apartment passed and get someone off the streets) and still have to be creative about how to cover the utilities. To add to the problem, we have to make sure that it’s an apartment that meets HUD quality standards and if the landlord won’t make sure it does, we loose the unit and have to start looking again. I know that I am preaching to the choir, but my real intent is to get you to share any data you have with me so we can start fighting the battle with weapons this year. Thanks.

Hope to see you all on the 19th, if we have standing room only I will be very happy. Even if you can’t come to the meeting, please send your comments or information on affordable housing (the lack there of) to me. Thanks.
